Zagreb School of Economics and Management successfully hosted the interactive In Two Minds masterclass, organized by ELEKS in collaboration with partners from the 4InnoPipe2 project. The program brought together students and participants interested in developing creative thinking, innovation skills, and more effective approaches to solving complex challenges.
Based primarily on the work of Dr. Iain McGilchrist, the masterclass explored how the two hemispheres of the brain shape different ways of understanding the world. While the left hemisphere seeks certainty, control, and clear answers, the right hemisphere opens space for intuition, creativity, and a richer understanding of reality. Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, participants explored how to develop divergent thinking, approach problems from different perspectives, and use metaphor and visual thinking as tools for innovation.
The masterclass was led by Colin Bennett, an educator with more than 35 years of experience working in education, corporate environments, and startup ecosystems. Reflecting on the Zagreb workshop, he emphasized:
“To really get to grips with our problems and develop better, more creative solutions, we need to dial down the left brain and free up the right. During the workshop, we explored the power of different perspectives, observation, empathy, and metaphor in the process of creative thinking.”
This year’s edition was further enriched through the combination of the In Two Minds approach with a Biomimicry masterclass led by Dr. Lyubomyr Matsekh. As Sustainability Portfolio Lead at ELEKS, Dr. Matsekh leads sustainability initiatives and supports global organizations in achieving their sustainability and climate goals. His interdisciplinary approach connects sustainability, entrepreneurship, and innovation, with a strong focus on practical and applicable solutions.
Speaking about the experience in Zagreb, he shared:
“Coming to Zagreb is always a pleasure – meeting colleagues who became friends, working with motivated students, and enjoying the innovative spirit of ZSEM. This time we combined the Biomimicry masterclass and In Two Minds masterclass to help teams find a way forward when they feel stuck in their projects. Nature already has the answers, and In Two Minds provides the pathways.”
Through practical tools, real-world examples, and collaborative teamwork, participants developed new ways of dealing with uncertainty, understanding different types of problems, and creating innovative solutions applicable in business, entrepreneurial, and creative environments.
At the end of the program, participants received certificates issued by Learn Biomimicry, the 4InnoPipe2 project, and Flames@SmileHigh.
